Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges facing our world today, and it is having a significant impact on various sectors of our lives. As an environment journalist, I have observed certain trends emerging in the field, and today I would like to share Four insights that I believe are particularly important regarding the latest developments in renewable energy.
Renewable energy importance has been trending (gaining momentum) in recent years, and here is why:
1. The costs of solar and wind power continue to fall, and many countries and businesses are now investing heavily in these technologies. In fact, in many progressive nations, renewable energy is now the cheapest source of electricity, even without subsidies. This shift towards renewables is not only good for the environment, but it also makes good economic sense. As we continue to move away from fossil fuels, we can expect to see even more innovation in the renewable energy sector, and more opportunities for businesses to thrive in a low-carbon economy.
2. Renewable energy is a key part of the fight against climate change. The burning of fossil fuels is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, which are driving global warming and causing a wide range of environmental problems (Given: we the people of Africa are the least emitters of this bad gas, but that hasn’t stopped us from bearing the harshest brunt of Climate Change— huge debate!)
Regardless of whether one is a citizen of the Global South or Global North, it is imperative for the world to shift to renewable energy. By transitioning, we can significantly reduce our carbon footprint and slow the pace of climate change. This is especially important given the the need to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius according to the ambitious goals of the United Nation’s Paris Agreement.
3. The growth of renewable energy is creating new opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship. As more countries and businesses adopt clean energy, there is a growing need for new technologies, services, and business models to support this transition. This is creating a range of new jobs and industries, from solar panel manufacturing, to energy storage, to electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The growth of renewable energy is not only driving innovation and entrepreneurship, but also creating new opportunities for job creation and economic growth.
However, there is a pressing need to address the gender gap in the energy sector, as women are still underrepresented in this field. According to a report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), women only make up 32% of the renewable energy workforce globally. This gender imbalance is particularly stark in technical and leadership roles, where women are often underrepresented.
To address this gap, more training and educational opportunities need to be provided to women and youth, to equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to participate in the growing renewable energy industry. This will not only help to promote gender equality but also ensure that the energy transition is inclusive and equitable.
I have written articles about the ASHDEN Awards, which recognize the work of innovators in the renewable energy sector. It is important to celebrate and highlight the contributions of these trailblazers, who are making a difference in creating a more sustainable and inclusive energy future.
4. The shift towards renewable energy is helping to reduce air pollution and improve public health. Fossil fuels are a major source of air pollution, which can cause respiratory illnesses, heart disease, and other health problems. I have also written reports about the issue of air pollution in Kenya. By using clean energy sources like wind and solar power, we can reduce these harmful emissions and create a healthier environment for everyone.
The trend towards renewable energy represents a positive and essential step towards a more sustainable and resilient future, and it is crucial that we continue to support and promote this transition towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy system.
As we face the challenge of Climate Change, it’s essential that individuals, businesses, and governments all take steps to accelerate the transition to renewable energy.
