The National Assembly this morning unanimously approved the appointment of Members to the Committee on Appointments following a motion moved by the Leader of the Majority Party, the Hon. Kimani Ichungwa.
The provisions of the National Assembly Standing Order 204 stipulate how the Committee is to be constituted.
“The Committee on Appointments is to be appointed by the House, consisting of the Speaker as a Chairperson, the Deputy Speaker, the Leader of the Majority Party, the Leader of the Minority party, the Deputy Leader of the Majority Party, the Deputy Leader of the Minority party and not more than fifteen other Members.”
In a session presided over by Deputy Speaker, the Hon. Gladys Boss, the House noted that the Committee on Appointments shall consider, for approval by the House, appointments under Articles 152(2) of the Constitution (Cabinet Secretaries), together with the Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act, No 33 of 2011.
This approval by the House now paves the way for the Committee to conduct approval hearings for the 22 persons nominated for appointment as Cabinet Secretaries, as well as the nominees for the positions of the Attorney General of the Republic of Kenya,and the Secretary to the Cabinet.
